Smith slips past Watertown in ninth

WATERTOWN — Smith County scored twice in the top of the night inning to defeat Watertown 7-5 Friday at Three Forks Park.

The Tigerettes trailed 5-1 going into the bottom of the seventh. But Mary Holden hit a two-run double and came around to score on an error. Jordan Brewington followed with a tying home run over the fence.

Smith County drew a one-out walk in the ninth, the only walk issued by Tiffany Tomlinson, who scattered nine hits while striking out seven and hitting one. Two singles and two errors followed to drop the Tigerettes' to 1-1.

"It was ugly at first, great in the middle and then they got two in the ninth," Watertown coach Brandy Holcomb said.

Smith County scored twice times in the second inning and three times in the third.

Watertown answered in the bottom of the third when Brewington doubled and scored on Mallory Josey's single.

The Tigerettes finished with eight hits, including Holden's double in the bottom of the ninth. McKay Hill singled twice and Leanna Warren once, scoring in the seventh.

Watertown will play host to Westmoreland at 5 p.m. Monday at Three Forks.

Leech's slam leads Lady Saints to opening win

MT. JULIET — Shelby Leech's inside-the-park grand-slam home run helped power Mt. Juliet Christian to a season-opening 20-3 win over Glencliff on Friday.

Leech doubled and singled as the Lady Saints lashed nine hits to back the pitching of Caroline Scott, who allowed two hits in the three-inning game.

Mt. Juliet Christian scored 16 times in the bottom of the first inning to wipe out a 1-0 Glencliff edge.

Audrey Hess singled as she and Ashley Walling tripled for the Lady Saints. Abi Hildebrand doubled. Ali Messick singled twice and Scott, and Morgan Adcock once each.

Mt. Juliet Christian will play at home on Tuesday against Donelson Christian.

Central goes 3-3 at Drakes Creek

HENDERSONVILLE — Wilson Central finished a 3-3 season-opening week in the Commando Classic with a 4-3 win over Dobyns Bennett and a 7-4 loss to LaVergne on Thursday at Drakes Creek Park.

Hannah Bodenhorn got the win against Dobyns Bennett, allowing three runs on four hits to improve to 2-1.

Rachel Tichenor went 2-for-2 with two runs scored while Kelsey Tomlin, Allie Bennett and Lauren Stavinoga each stroked one hit.

LaVergne scored three first-inning runs and added two more in the second to drop Morgan Powell to 1-2. A season-high five errors made just three Lady Wolverine runs earned.

All four Wilson Central hits came in the fourth inning, including Stavinoga's two-run homer, her second blast of the season. Bennett, Powell and Hailey Hubbell had the other hits.

The Lady Wildcats will travel to Orlando's Disney's Wide World of Sports for a series of games starting Monday.
