Suber opens CU spring practice today

From staff reports

First-year Cumberland football coach Donnie Suber and the Bulldogs begin spring practice today at 4 p.m., the first of 16 sessions for the team that will conclude April 20 with the spring game at Nokes-Lasater Field.

A total of 117 players will take part in spring drills, including 33 letterwinners and eight starters from last year’s club that finished 8-3 overall under Dewayne Alexander, who left in January after seven seasons to take the offensive line coach position at Tennessee Tech.

The Bulldogs will practice every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 4 p.m. on April 1-20 and will hold practice sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday next week before taking a break for Easter.

The squad will scrimmage at 10 a.m. on April 6 and 13 and the Spring Game will take place at 11 a.m. on April 20.

“We lost 27 seniors from last year’s club, so we’re going to be very young at a lot of positions, especially on defense,” Suber said. “Spring practice will be an important time for our team to install a new offense and really get the tempo for practice and the way we want to play implemented for the whole squad.”

Suber has promoted Ryan Locke to quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator and hired Brad Bustle as the team’s offensive line coach for the upcoming season.
