Commission recognizes Volunteer Stars
Dec 19, 2012 4:20 pm
Wilson County's Governor’s Volunteer Stars were recognized Monday night at the Wilson County Commission meeting, receiving accolades and applause for their accomplishments. The awards are designed to recognize the top volunteers in each county of the Volunteer State.
In Wilson County, a committee was formed to process the nominations to choose the top five adult and the top six youth nominees. The committee was made up of Ken Sweeney, the county mayor's Coordinator of Special Projects Carol Knight, United Way President John McMillin and Lisa Dickson with Wilson County Schools.
"We had to find one adult and one student who exemplified volunteers in our county," Knight told the commission. "We are absolutely blessed in this county that we have so many volunteers. We began the process in July."
After careful consideration, the committee chose Jessica Fults, a senior at Wilson Central High School, as the youth nominee. Since the adult winner can be an event, the committee chose one of Wilson County's biggest events - the annual Sherry's Run, which benefits victims of cancer.
Fults was accompanied by her parents as Wilson County Mayor Randall Hutto read a list of her volunteer credentials. Sherry's Run was represented by Gary Whitaker, the husband of the late Sherry Whitaker for whom the event is named, and Tamara Lampsa, who was a good friend of Whitaker and who was instrumental with getting the yearly race started, along with Tonyia Watson and Tiffy Clemons.
Recipients of the volunteer awards will be honored at the Governor’s Volunteer Stars ceremony in Nashville in March, and the Wilson County nominees will be honored at a dinner Jan. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Veteran's Building on the Wilson County Fairgrounds.
