Surprise! LHS shows up and splits at Mt. Juliet
Apr 05, 2007 12:00 am
MT. JULIET — Monday was originally scheduled as a day of practice for Mt. Juliet in preparation for today's match at Smyrna.
So imagine Mt. Juliet's surprise surprise when Lebanon rides up to Charlie Daniels Park dressed for a match.
Due to a coaching change which began when longtime Mt. Juliet coach Linda McDearman retired and Derek Elwell taking over before the start of the season, with another coach in between, Lebanon got lost in the scheduling shuffle.
Lebanon's girls beat the surprised Lady Bears 7-2 while Mt. Juliet's boys doubled up the Blue Devils 6-3.
Mt. Juliet's girls led 2-1 following the doubles before the Devilettes swept the six singles.
Chelsea Fyke beat Molly McCabe 8-2, sister Courtney Fyke finished off Jessica Porter 8-1, Sarah Morgan defeated Kelsey Copeland 8-2, Kacey Conatser edged Brooke Jefcoat 8-6, Samantha McElfresh knocked off Lindsey Gaither 8-2 and Christy Booher outscored Caroline Sugg 8-6 as the Devilettes moved to 4-1 for the season.
The Fyke sisters began their afternoon with an 8-4 defeat of McCabe and Jefcoat.
Lady Bear winners were Porter and Copeland over Morgan and Conatser 8-6 and Gaither and Katie Kelly over McElfresh and Clacey Farley 9-8 [7-5 in the tiebreaker].
Mt. Juliet's boys won 2 of 3 doubles matches to launch themselves to victory, dropping the Blue Devils to 2-3.
Kenny Smith and Jeff Gurch edged Andrew Puryear and Patrick Jones 8-6 while Clark and Andrew Manus beat Peter Misaiphon and Zac Morgan 8-3.
Singles winners for the Golden Bears were Jess Dillard over John Do 9-7, Andy Mihalik over Ben Fennell 8-5, Smith over Misaiphon 8-5 and Manus over Morgan 8-6.
Blue Devil winners were Do and Fennell over Dillard and Matt Freda 8-6, Puryear over Freda 9-8 [7-3 in the tiebreaker] and Jones over Gurch 8-5.
Lebanon will travel to Old Fort Park in Murfreesboro today for a 4 p.m. match against Siegel.
No. 1 doubles settles FCS-MJCA girls' match
OLD HICKORY — While Friendship Christian's unbeaten boys breezed to a 6-1 win over host Mt. Juliet Christian on Monday, all eyes were on the No. 1 girls' doubles match between FCS' Paige Watson and Christen Tressler and MJCA's Crystal Harwell and Cindy Overstreet at Old Hickory Country Club.
With the girls tied 4-4, Watson and Tressler tipped the scales, barely, to Friendship's side with a 7-4 tiebreaker win for a 9-8 decision, leaving the Lady Commanders also undefeated at 6-0.
"Paige and Christen played outstanding," said Mt. Juliet Christian coach John Harwell, whose daughter, Crystal, was part of a state doubles championship two years ago and rarely loses.
Singles winners for the Lady Commanders were Ashley Ayub over Chelsea Mobley 8-5, Katie Mitchell over Hannah Jordan 8-0 and Hannah Neal over Betsy Harris 8-0.
The Lady Saints swept the Nos. 1-3 singles and No. 2 doubles. Harwell shut out Watson 8-0, Kate Walker doubled up Tressler 8-4 and Overstreet stopped Amanda Ferrell 8-4. Walker and Mobley defeated Ferrell and Ayub 8-4.
Jordan and Harris lost 8-3 to Friendship's Mitchell and Neal.
Singles winners for the Commanders were Dillon Bane over Josh McKenzie 8-1, Hunter Harwell [Coach Harwell's son] over Caleb Wagler 8-2, Jonathan Huddleston over Sam Anderson 8-0 and Michael Smith over Ben Brescka 8-3.
Doubles winners were Bane and Andrew Neely over McKenzie and Andrew Ziady 8-5 and Huddleston and Trey Farmer over Wagler and Brescka 8-1.
Ziady had the Saints' only win, 8-5 over Jordan Huddleston.
Friendship will take on Lebanon at Cumberland at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Mt. Juliet Christian will travel to Macon County at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
