Threes sink CU
In what appeared to be a game of three-point derby, visiting Crichton had just a little bit more firepower Saturday as the Comets streaked past Cumberland 73-70 at the Dallas Floyd Center.
Deshawn Danzey dropped in four triples on his way to 25 points for Crichton while Demario Chaffin fired in five threes en route to 19 as the visitors from Memphis improved to 14-7 for the season and 6-3 in the TranSouth Conference. Jonathan Bohana tossed in all 12 of his free throws on his way to 14 as the Comets connected on 22 of 27 from the line and Cumberland just 5 of 13.
Thomas Douglas drained 22 points and Brandon Oldham 11 for Cumberland as each threw in three treys. Kevin Bufford added eight while Aurimas Silys scored seven; Torrez Hampton, Desmond Rhodes and Jason Langelier six each and Joseph Northington four as the 'Dawgs dropped to 11-9, 3-6.
Cumberland lost despite shooting almost 53 percent from the floor while Crichton connected on just a shade under 43 percent. The 'Dawgs also dominated the glass 35-21.
Oldham passed for five assists for Cumberland, a total surpassed by Crichton's Melvin Wilkes, who had eight.
The teams were tied 36-36 at halftime.
Cumberland will travel to Jackson on Thursday for an 8 p.m. TSC tipoff at Union.
