I won’t pick Denver (the Super Bowl runner-ups are almost as bad the next season) or New England (I’ve picked the Patriots too many times) and I can’t come up with another viable AFC team. So — again, if you eliminate Seattle — it’s realistically down to New Orleans, Green Bay or the 49ers

It’s just fairer to award something based on season-long supremacy head-to-head rather than on an exhibition game that mainly served to salute a great player, who happens to play in the A.L.

if Sam can contribute to an NFL defense — and his SEC Defensive Player of the Year award sort of suggests that he can — then his sexual orientation doesn’t lessen that.
