Union overtakes CU
HENDERSON — Union scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning Wednesday night as the third-seeded Lady Bulldogs overtook sixth-seed Cumberland 6-5 in the final game of the opening round of the TranSouth Conference tournament.
Cumberland [also known as the Lady Bulldogs] scored twice in the top of the first inning before Union went up 3-2 in the bottom of the inning and added another run in the second. CU scored three times in the fourth to go ahead 5-4.
Jessica Moon, pitching three innings in relief of starter Alli Donnelly, took the loss as CU slipped to 11-26 going into today's 11 a.m. elimination game against No. 5 Bethel, which dropped a nine-inning 3-2 decision to host Freed-Hardeman.
Ashley Walters drove in two runs for Union as Cassie Turley took the win with 3 1/3 innings of relief for starter Amy Chatham as the Lady Bulldogs from nearby Jackson improved to 36-14 going into today's 5 p.m. game against No. 2 Martin Methodist, a 9-1 winner over No. 7 Lambuth in five innings.
Cumberland outhit Union 8-5 with Mt. Juliet's Amy Eden going 3-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in. Kassie Taylor drove in two runs.
Also on Wednesday, No. 9 Mid-Continent beat No. 8 Crichton 3-1 in 10 innings before falling to top-seeded Trevecca 9-0. Sophomore Chelsea Bailey, from Wilson Central, went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the leadoff spot for the Lady Trojans, who will face No. 4 Freed-Hardeman at 3 p.m. today.
In today's games, Lambuth and Mid-Continent meet at 9 a.m. with the winner taking on Crichton at 1 p.m. in a pair of elimination games. In between, Cumberland and Bethel will play for their seasons at 11 with the winner advancing to a 7 p.m. game tonight against the Union-Martin Methodist loser.
