Wesleyan doubles up Dawgs 8-4

ATHENS — Tennessee Wesleyan broke a tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday and added insurance scores later for an 8-4 victory over visiting Cumberland at Jack Bowling Field.
Matt Gray tripled home the go-ahead run and scored moments later on Vladimir Frias' squeeze bunt.
Dean McDermond drove in three runs on three hits for Wesleyan, including a two-run single in the first inning and an RBI infield hit in the third.
Luis Martinez's sacrifice fly and Clint Alexander's two-run homer lifted Cumberland into a short-lived 3-3 tie in the top of the third. Jason Bush's RBI single to right-center field brought the visiting Bulldogs into a 4-4 deadlock in the top of the sixth.
Jared Stanley homered in the seventh for Wesleyan, which improved to 10-5.
Anthony Fomasi pitched the first six innings to fall to 1-1. The junior left-hander was touched for six runs on five hits. Myles Anderson and Matt Madigan each pitched an inning as CU slipped to 8-5-1.
Travis McDaniel tossed the first six innings, allowing five hits, to improve to 2-0 for Wesleyan.
Cumberland is scheduled to open TranSouth Conference play this weekend with a three-game series in Henderson against Freed-Hardeman. The teams will play a single game at 6 p.m. tonight and a double header at noon tomorrow. The Lions are led by senior center-fielder Justin Forrest of Lebanon.
