This past Sunday afternoon and early evening as I was driving on N. Mt. Juliet Road, a bright orange shirt on a lawn tractor caught my eye. As I neared the man on the mower I realized it was a city employee mowing grass along the road in the right-of-way. Having been way too hot that day for most folks to be outside, I was a bit taken aback.

Over the years, I have taken less interest in local political elections, concentrating on state and federal election. The reason was simple in that I had more of a pecuniary interest in those areas. I still do, but my interest in the local elections has become more important to me.

I would like to thank H&R Block for sponsoring the Caps for Cancer competition at the Wilson County Fair this year. Each person who entered or donated a cap is special indeed for caring for others.

As you know, Aug. 7 is Election Day, and it is important to elect the people who have demonstrated that they are most worthy to serve. We have some fine candidates running, and it can be confusing who has made the greatest impact on our lives and those of the citizens of this state.

I have been a victim advocate for the past 15 years, and as such, have had the honor of working with all types of victimizations. During this election, voters will have the opportunity to decide if they want to retain Supreme Court justices Wade, Clark and Lee. Many readers have probably seen some of the ads being played on both sides that have focused on politics and labels; however, I want to turn our attention to what is really at stake here – victims’ rights and public safety.
