Eighteen vendors show up for last Batch and Bushel of the year

Eighteen vendors came out Thursday night for the last Batch and Bushel Farmer’s Market of the year at the James E. Ward Agricultural Center.

The event was held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday evenings at the Wilson County fairgrounds and started Sept. 7. It featured locally sourced food, beverage and craft stations.

This year was a test year for the market to see if there would be enough interest to do it every year.

“Very excited at how the test market has gone,” said event coordinator Charity Toombs. “We’re excited to announce that the vendors are very excited at the response, and we will make plans and an announcement for the 2018 growing season.”

Toombs said next year’s event will likely be longer than this year’s, but they’re still trying to figure out a way to work around the Wilson County Fair.

“That’s the big discussion for us is, does that start in April or does that start later on?” said Toombs. “The fair coming in on the grounds pretty much takes up the whole month of August, so we’ll be working through some kinks, but the vendors are excited and obviously we’re excited, and we appreciate the community’s support and we’re ready to take the event to the next level.”

The Batch and Bushel event began in January with the Batch and Bushel showcase in the Wilson County Expo Center.

The showcase invited local craftspeople to sell their wares to the community and will likely be held again next year.

“Essentially, this is like the actual produce side of the showcase in January, because obviously in January there’s not much to show,” said Toombs. “What I think people will be excited about is that some of the vendors you see here at the market will be part of the showcase in January, and then we’ll start the process over again.”

For anyone who missed the Batch and Bushel Farmer’s Market, a small sample of the vendors will be at the Taste of Wilson County on Thursday from 5-8 p.m.
