Masa Nalovic and Isidora Markovic led the Phoenix combining for 23 kills and Sara Glassman added 24 assists in the victory. Cumberland (11-6, 2-1 Mid-South) added ten blocks, five block assists from Nalovic and the squad hit .231 on the day.
A 10-5 started the first set which paced the CU to a 19-9 advantage before the Bears (5-11, 0-3 Mid-South) tacked on six straight points, three of those being errors on the Phoenix. A point from Markovic broke the streak but the University of Pikeville recorded three more points pulling within four, 21-17. A kill by Markovic and Amanda Worrell kept the Phoenix in the lead, before four consecutive points from Pikeville. Another point from Worrell and an attack error help the squad to a 25-21 win in the first set.
The second set looked much like the first with the Phoenix pulling ahead 12-5 and a service ace from Rachel Clement sparked an 8- 4 run stretching the advantage to 20-9. Errors played a huge part in the final points of the match, Cumberland allowing four and the Bears with five. A kill by Markovic closed out the second set, 25-16.
Pikeville seemed to find their way in the third stanza taking a 6-2 lead, with three errors on the Phoenix playing in their favor. A kill by Jena Goodman and Mikayla Wickham kept the squad within one, 6-5. Four unanswered points for the Bears stretched the lead, 10-5.
Cumberland tried to make a comeback knotting the score at 13 before six consecutive points for the Bears helped them pull ahead, 19-13, The Phoenix answered with four points but three kills from Noelani Simpson and one from Cassie Jones and Savanna Zakman helped the Bears take the third frame, 25-20.
Cumberland started strong in the final set with eight consecutive points before a kill from Katie Slone ended the streak. The University of Pikeville scored four more points cutting the deficit to four, before the Phoenix tacked on six straight points for a 19-9 advantage. CU allowed the Bears to score just three more points in the set, before rounding out the frame with a 25-12 victory.
Noelani Simpson paced the Bears with 17 kills and Savanna Zaman collected 31 assists on the day. Brittany Reels added 22 digs and Pikeville recorded five blocks.
The Phoenix will continue Mid-South conference play, playing host to the University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
