Jaylen Abston carried Walter J. Baird’s boys in three overtimes Wednesday in a 47-45 win over Southside in the second annual Slamming Santa Christmas Tournament at Winfree Bryant.
Abston scored nine of his 20 points in the overtimes, including a three-pointer to end the second OT in a 40-40 tie. The teams were tied 36-36 at the end of regulation and 36-36 following the first overtime.
Southside led 10-6 following the first quarter, 19-18 at halftime and 30-26 going into the fourth.
Wyatt Bowling led Southside with 16 points. Easton Forsyth finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Quin Long knocked nine points while Caden Baird and Ryan Buckner each threw in three as the Saints slipped to 6-9.
Auston Gore buried three triples for Baird while Mason Tisdale finished with five, Rubin Brinkley four and Ke’Jon Wood and Aidan Donald two each.
Baird will face host Winfree Bryant at 5 p.m. Friday. Southside will return Saturday for a 10:15 a.m. loser’s bracket game against the loser of Thursday’s meeting between Carroll-Oakland and Clay County.
Carroll-Oakland and Clay County will meet in a girls’ game at 5 p.m. Thursday, followed by the boys. Winfree Bryant’s girls will meet the winner of Wednesday’s opening game between Southside and Walter J. Baird at 7:30.
Avery Trace’s girls and boys will play winner’s bracket games starting at 6:15 p.m. Friday.
Six games are on tap for Saturday to wrap up the tournament.
