BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Third-seeded Cumberland advanced to the Mid-South Conference women’s soccer tournament finals with a 2-0 victory over Georgetown (Ky.) Thursday at The Pit at Bowling Green Junior High School.
Mariah Aplin and Haley Stevens each scored a goal for Cumberland (16-2-1). The Phoenix outshot the Tigers (6-11-1) 24-6 with an 11-1 edge in shots on goal. Megan Martin had nine saves in goal for Georgetown.
Cumberland struck first in the 43rd minute. Aplin scored a rebound goal off the Tiger goalkeeper’s block to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead. Cumberland did not allow Georgetown register a shot in the first half. The Phoenix had 13 shots with five being on goal in the half.
Stevens put Cumberland up 2-0 in the 68th minute. Rebecca Holloway played a through-ball to Stevens which caused the Georgetown goalkeeper to come out and play the ball. Stevens then fired it past the keeper for the goal.
Cumberland advanced to play top-seeded Lindsey Wilson in the finals at 4 p.m. at The Pit at Bowling Green Junior High School.
