Portland Lady Panther soccer coach Ryan Goostree is optimistic about this years’ 2015 squad. Goostree returns several experienced players along with a large group of underclassmen that will be with the program for the next few seasons.
“We have good depth and good experience and leadership,” Goostree said in a recent interview. “The improvement we have had is good. The girls have put in a lot of work.”
Portland has started the season 1-1 with a win over East Robertson and a loss to state powerhouse Hendersonville last week.
Goostree has Vicky Roe at goalkeeper, with inside defenders consisting of Ashley McIntosh and Hannah Glover. The outside left defender is Anna Gentry and the outside right defender is Sam Vance. At the two spot is Rachel Cherry and Sam England, and the center midfielder is Kiera Curry.
The left and right midfielder is Camrin Lyle and Mac Craddock, respectively, and Chasey Piper is the team’s striker., Ashley McIntosh, Sam Vance and Anna Gentry play defense.
“Vicky is like wall,” Goostree said of his junior goalkeeper. “She does an excellent job there.”
Roe had 28 saves in last week’s loss to Hendersonville.
The Lady Panthers have a lot of utility players, which also gives Goostree different looks.
“We do switch up the girls a lot,” said Goostree. “We have multiple position players. We have overall experience and players that fit our system. We have increased our tempo and become a more offensive minded team. We have a lot of options on offense.”
Portland went 1-1-2 in their playday a few weeks and defeated Kenwood in a scrimmage two weeks ago.
The Purple played well against Hendersonville last week, and Goostree hopes that is a sign of the future.
“I think we will (see) the fruits of our labor,” he said. “Hopefully the work the girls put in will pay off for us.”
The entire roster consists of senior Sam England along with juniors Allison Richards, Rachel Cherry, Hannah Glover, Ashley McIntosh and Vicky Roe. Sophomores include: Camrin Lyle, Ele Loza, Katelyn Woodall, Sam Vance, Anna Gentry, Maggie Smith, Hailee Sargent, Tia Anderson, Mac Craddock and Daisy Greer.
Rounding out the list are ninth graders: M.K. Reels, Meagan Kellum, Kiera Curry, Chasey Piper and Savanna Horn.
