Mathis ties FCS scoring record

Andy Reed • The Lebanon Democrat

Andrew Mathis scored a Friendship Christian-record-tying 44 points Monday against Floyd Central (Ky.) at the King of the Smokies tournament in Pigeon Forge. The senior forward shot 16-of-22 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, and was 8-of-11 from the free-throw line. He also racked up seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal. Mathis tied the mark of 44 points originally set by Chris Cardwell in 1989-90 against Westbury Christian (Houston, Texas), ironically the school where Commander coach Ben Johnson spent nine seasons as an assistant before returning to his alma mater in 2013. Former FCS girls' coach Steve Hawley has been a coach at Westbury since leaving the Coles Ferry Pike school in 1998. For the season, Mathis is averaging 18.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.
