The Portland Preservation Foundation held a Temple Theatre personalized brick unveiling on Tuesday, Dec. 20.
Guests met inside the Theatre, which is under renovation, to hear remarks by Chairman Billy Geminden and Mayor Ken Wilber.
Geminden expressed his appreciation to the community for investing in the project. He has set 2017 as the year that “It’s a Wonderful Life” will be shown in the theatre during the Christmas season.
Mayor Wilber expressed his thanks to those who bought bricks to help raise money for the project. He acknowledged that the bricks were more than bricks, and they recognized people and memories from the Temple Theatre.
The program has received support and grants from The State of Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development — Certified Downtown Program, Tennessee Arts Commission, Memorial Foundation, City of Portland Mayor and City Council.
In addition, Germinden acknowledged numerous private donations of time and resources from throughout the Portland community and beyond.
Mayor Ken Wilber helped Joan Hodges and Lila Brewer unveil the new bricks to be added to the sidewalk in front of the theatre. Hodges and Brewer grew up attending The Temple Theatre.
